Financing Small Piped Water Systems in Kenya

The Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) initiated a pilot program in 2006 to finance investments in community-managed piped water systems in central Kenya. A number of valuable lessons learned from the pilot are useful in the scale-up phase and to other projects using a similar approach to finance small water systems. Rajesh Advani (Finance Specialist, WSP - Africa)outlines the innovative program to finance Kenya's small piped water systems, and describes the challenges involved with leveraging sunsidies to water providers and with the scaling-up process.

 

Will Davies (IFC Advisory Services) discuss a recent study by IFC which assessed the potential for scaling up commercial financing of small piped water systems across KEnya.

 

Elly Aguko (Head of Special Projects, K-rep Bank) describes the scaling-up phase and the role of the private sector in community-managed water systems. 

 

Iain Menzies (Sr. Infrastructure Specialist, GPOBA) describes how the output-based aid design in this program encourages scaling-up for service providers.
